We offer a part time nursery (15 hours each week) to pre school children at Grendon.
Nursery is open 5 days each week Monday to Friday from 9am to 12 noon. It is closed during school holidays.
Our nursery class offers pre-school education to children aged 3-4 years old who will become eligible for a reception place the following school year. We are staffed by a qualified teacher with a teaching assistant and can accept up to 26 children.
We follow the EYFS curriculum and focus on the prime areas of personal and social skills, communication and physical development (including self care) before moving towards embracing the wider curriculum. Children's progress is recorded using an online Learning Journal 'Tapestry' which allows school to closely track individual achievements and provides parents with a clear insight into what and how their child is learning at school. Parents sign a Responsible use policy before gaining access to their child's account.
We have a large bright classroom area with self contained toilets, space for art and messy play, a carpeted area and a 'quiet room' with books for sharing. Outside we have a large nursery garden with space for bikes, climbing and creativity. A play house, mud kitchen and a set of rain suits allow children to explore together and we like to grow plants too. Being on a school site allows us to access the school grounds and technology resources. We will sometimes join the whole school for celebration assemblies and other events.
We provide a daily snack of fruit and milk but do not provide lunch at nursery. Parents are asked to contribute biscuits to share at snack time. Children should bring a drink of water in a sports bottle.
Children are required to wear school uniform in nursery.
At the start of the year, we encourage families to attend stay and play sessions in nursery to develop familiarity and we also offer a home visit before the child's start date. We operate a staggered start so that children have the space and support they require to make the successful transition from home to nursery.
As we are a school setting, we do not have the staff or the facilities to support nappy changes and as such, we request that all children are fully toilet trained before they begin nursery. Naturally, accidents do sometimes happen and we ask parents to provide a full change of clothes which will be stored in school.
An essential part of our nursery is in supporting children to develop healthy relationships with one another. We use a target board reward system to visually represent good behaviour choices 'staying in gold'.
Stay and play sessions are held regularly throughout the year to allow parents to share in children's learning. Visits to the local area and further afield may be arranged subject to staffing ratios.
At the end of the nursery year for transition towards Reception, we make use of the school hall for PE lessons and visit reception classrooms to enable children to gain confidence and familiarity with their new environment.
It should be noted that a place at Grendon nursery does not automatically entitle you to a place in the following years reception classes. Families will be required to apply for a place at school following the Birmingham City Council process and timings.
If you are interested in your child attending Grendon nursery, complete an application form and return it to our school office. Applications are always open. Application forms can be collected and returned to the school office. Offers of places in September will be made in April.
